INTRODUCTION
I have always been fascinated by gapped sentences. I believe the exercise is one of the most creative ones ever. Not only is it a linguistic feast, but it is also a highly intellectual challenge. Initially it featured only in Cambridge Proficiency in English Exam in the Use of English Paper (Part 3). To my delight it has achieved a greater status. From December 2008 it is also part of Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English Exam in the Use of English Paper (Part 4).
This publication was created out of necessity. A typical book containing tests for Cambridge Advanced or Proficiency exams usually offers between 25 to 30 examples. Each time I did them I wanted more. Unfortunately I could not come across any single volume that would satisfy my linguistic appetite. It was then that I hit on the idea of creating this book.
THE AIM
The book can help thousands of CAE and Proficiency students to deal with gapped sentences. As an English teacher myself, I know full well that it is one of the most feared exercises that candidates have to face. Practice makes perfect and the number of trios in the publication can almost guarantee the success in the exams. This type of exercise can also improve one’s overall language competence as thousands of collocations can be assimilated on the way.
Another reason this book was born was to give thousands of English language enthusiasts around the world a chance to experience unforgettable linguistic and intellectual moments while working out the answers.
WORDS THAT ARE USED
I meticulously scoured an English dictionary from cover to cover and chose only those words that can lend themselves to this type of exercise. I believe the final product is the most comprehensive and thorough work on words used for gapped sentences. About 900 words are used in the trios. Dozens of them are employed more than once because they have so many different meanings and can form a host of collocations. The key to all the trios is provided at the end.
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY
The trios are not given at random. They appear from the easiest to the most challenging ones. I believe the order roughly reflects the rising level of difficulty for Advanced and Proficiency levels.
HOW TO WORK WITH THE BOOK
With only one type of exercise featuring in the book, I realize I might be accused of trying to bore the users to death. That is why I suggest short sessions with the book though I do not intend to dictate anybody how to make the most of it. Working on the trios should be associated with fun, not drudgery.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I am deeply indebted to Allan Yearwood, the owner of English Perfect – a private language school in Olsztyn, Poland. His incisive comments and constructive suggestions contributed greatly to the quality of the book.
